Responsible Screening

The average American spends more than 10 hours a day staring at a screen.

In today’s technologically advanced world, electronic devices are everywhere.

Whether at home, work or in line at the grocery store, chances are you or the people around you are clocking time on one of these popular devices: smartphones, tablets, computers, handheld gaming consoles, or OLED TVs.

While this is not necessarily a bad thing, the importance of responsible screening also cannot be overstated, especially in the prevention of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) or Digital Eye Strain.

Indications of CVS include eyestrain, blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches, and neck pain. These symptoms are thought to be caused by poor lighting, glare on a digital screen, improper viewing distances, poor seating posture, or uncorrected vision problems.

Symptoms will vary from one person to the next depending on their visual abilities and device use. Making an appointment with an eye care specialist is key to treating symptoms. There are also several preventative measures you can take.

In fact, Shire recently launched an initiative, encouraging individuals to ‘screen responsibly.’ Their website now includes information on dry eye, a screen personality quiz, and patient stories.

Here are some ways to ensure responsible screening:

Display Brightness

A good rule of thumb: The brightness of your screen should match your surrounding workspace lighting. Applying anti-glare filters to your screen can also provide relief from digital eye strain.

Monitor Position

Position your computer monitor 20 to 28 inches away from your face and 15 to 20 degrees below eye level from the center of the screen. If you cannot adjust your monitor’s height, raise or lower your chair.

20-20-20 Rule

Follow the American Optometric Association’s 20-20-20 rule. Look away from your screen for 20 seconds at a time every 20 minutes. Focus on something that is 20 feet away to give your eyes a break.

Unplug

Set aside a time each day to take a break from your electronics. Pick a time and commit to it; even adding it to your calendar if you must. Use this time to reconnect with your surroundings or the person next to you.
